Five priorities for Ward 4

Every priority below follows the same structure: the problem residents are experiencing, why it matters to everyday life, what Nirmala will advocate for — and how she will report back to you.

01

A Councillor Who Responds

Representation does not end when the election does.

The problem

Too many residents describe the same experience: they raise a concern, and then they hear nothing. The issue disappears into City Hall.

Why it matters

People can accept an answer they do not like. What they cannot accept is silence. Trust in local government is built on being acknowledged and kept informed.

My plan

  • Acknowledge every resident who reaches out
  • Hold regular community office hours across Ward 4
  • Track concerns from first contact through to resolution
  • Say plainly when something cannot be done, and explain why

How I will report back

  • Regular Ward 4 updates by email and online
  • Follow-up on individual concerns, not just general announcements
  • An open record of what was raised and what happened next

The standardListen. Respond. Follow up. Report back.

02

Safe, Clean & Connected Neighbourhoods

Communities where everyone can feel safe, connected and proud to call home.

The problem

Residents raise the same everyday concerns: lighting, speeding, property standards, park upkeep, accessibility barriers and places for young people and seniors to gather.

Why it matters

Safety and belonging are built street by street. Families, seniors, young people and residents of all abilities should all be able to move through this community comfortably.

My plan

  • Work with York Regional Police and City staff on neighbourhood safety concerns
  • Push for well-maintained parks, trails, lighting and public spaces
  • Champion accessibility in sidewalks, crossings, parks and public buildings
  • Support programming for seniors, youth and newcomers across the ward

How I will report back

  • Neighbourhood-level updates on the issues residents raised
  • Clear timelines when a repair or improvement is scheduled
  • Regular walk-arounds and community office hours across Ward 4

The goalNeighbourhoods that feel safe, cared for and welcoming to everyone.

03

Protect Affordability & Respect Taxpayers

Residents work hard for their money. City Hall should treat it that way.

The problem

The cost of living keeps climbing, and every municipal increase lands on households that are already stretched — seniors on fixed incomes, young families, renters and small businesses alike.

Why it matters

Affordability is what decides whether people can stay in the community they helped build. Respecting taxpayers is not about cutting services. It is about getting value for every dollar.

My plan

  • Scrutinize budgets line by line and ask what residents actually receive in return
  • Protect the core services people rely on every day
  • Look for savings in process, procurement and duplication before service cuts
  • Support programs that help seniors, families and small businesses stay in Ward 4

How I will report back

  • A pre-budget update in plain language, before decisions are made
  • A record of how I voted on spending, and why
  • Answers to residents’ questions about where their tax dollars went

The goalStrong municipal services, and value for every dollar.

04

Responsible Growth

Growth should improve our community, not overwhelm it.

The problem

Ward 4 is one of the fastest-changing parts of Vaughan. Too often development arrives before the roads, transit, parks, schools and services needed to support it.

Why it matters

Residents are not against growth. They are against growth that makes daily life harder — longer commutes, fuller parks, more pressure on services and neighbourhoods that no longer feel like their own.

My plan

  • Insist that infrastructure and services keep pace with new development
  • Push for meaningful, early consultation — not notice after the fact
  • Advocate for design that respects the character of existing neighbourhoods
  • Ask hard questions about traffic, parking and servicing at every application

How I will report back

  • Plain-language summaries of major applications affecting Ward 4
  • Clear notice of public meetings, with enough time to actually attend
  • An explanation of how residents’ input changed — or did not change — a decision

The goalDevelopment that our infrastructure can actually support.

05

Fix Traffic & Get Ward 4 Moving

Better planning. Safer streets. Less time stuck in traffic.

The problem

Congestion on major corridors, speeding on residential streets, cut-through traffic through neighbourhoods, and construction that is poorly coordinated between the City, the Region and utilities.

Why it matters

Traffic is not just about cars. It is about time. Every additional hour spent sitting in congestion is time that could have been spent with family, caring for a loved one, supporting a local business or simply enjoying life.

My plan

  • Advocate for practical traffic-calming where residents report chronic speeding
  • Push for safer pedestrian crossings, sidewalks and school-zone safety
  • Press for better coordination of road construction and lane closures
  • Support improved transit connectivity across Concord and Thornhill North
  • Keep road maintenance and repair on the City’s priority list

How I will report back

  • A running list of the traffic concerns residents report, by neighbourhood
  • Updates on what was requested, what was approved and what was declined
  • Plain-language explanations when a decision rests with York Region or the Province

The goalGive Ward 4 families more of their time back.
